Medang: Retro Script Font for Web Design

As a web designer, I’m always on the lookout for fonts that bring personality and visual interest to a site without sacrificing usability. Medang, a retro script font from Script Amp, has quickly become one of my go-to choices for adding a nostalgic flair to digital projects.

Testing Medang in a Hero Section

I recently tested Medang in a hero section for a boutique online store. The font’s flowing curves and vintage feel perfectly complemented the brand’s aesthetic. It stood out against a bold background while still maintaining enough legibility to work well on mobile screens. The PUA encoding was a nice touch, allowing me to access all the ligatures and alternate glyphs without any issues.

Using Medang for Call-to-Action Buttons

For a coaching website, I used Medang in the call-to-action button. The font’s elegant yet playful style made it ideal for drawing attention without being overwhelming. On smaller screens, it scaled nicely and didn’t lose its character. Pairing it with a clean sans serif for the body text created a balanced look that felt both modern and inviting.

Medang in Landing Pages and Headers

On a product landing page, Medang worked well as a header font. It added a sense of authenticity and charm that matched the brand’s handmade vibe. The font’s weight and spacing allowed it to be readable even when placed over image banners or dark backgrounds. It also paired beautifully with a minimalist layout, making the design feel cohesive and intentional.

Considerations for Web Usability

While Medang is great for display purposes, it’s not ideal for long paragraphs of text. In a blog redesign, I found that using it for body copy made the content harder to scan. That said, it shined when used for headings, subheadings, and decorative accents. For a more editorial feel, I paired it with a simple serif font, which helped maintain readability without losing the vintage charm.

Font Pairing and Accessibility

When working on a digital brand kit, I experimented with different font pairings. A clean sans serif like Open Sans made a perfect contrast to Medang’s ornate style. This combination worked well for both headers and body text, creating a professional yet approachable look. I also made sure to test the font on various screen sizes and color combinations to ensure accessibility and clarity.

Final Thoughts on Medang for Web Design

Medang is a versatile font that brings a unique retro energy to web design. Whether you’re working on a creative portfolio, an online store, or a marketing campaign, it can add a touch of personality that sets your project apart. Just remember to use it strategically—save it for headlines, buttons, and decorative elements rather than dense blocks of text.
